LG launches online store in expansion program

To support LG Electronics’ on-going growth strategy of increasing the company’s footprint in the country, the company is now tapping into the online space with the launch of an independent e-commerce channel.

The move comes hot on the heels of the company’s recent shs 100 million investment in retail outlet expansion in the Eastern Africa region. The retail expansion plan, now in its second phase, will see 10 new stores opened this year, bringing LG’s retail store count in the Eastern African region to a total of 122. Kenya, will have a total of seven outlets after the opening of new ones.

By opening the online store, the company is increasing its products’ availability beyond the physical stores and comes against the backdrop of consumers’ increased access to the internet through mobile phone technology as well as a fast-growing middle class.

Experts say Kenya’s electronic commerce market is primed for major growth in the next five years as mobile internet performance continues to improve, and people become more comfortable with digital transactions.

According to Internet World Stats, an international website that features up to date world internet usage statistics, Kenya’s internet penetration in March this year was at 77.8%, with number of internet users having grown from 200,000 in December 2010 to 37,718,560.

Along with seven retail stores and products available in major supermarkets, our customers in Kenya will now have twenty-four-hour access to the best of our innovative, genuine and quality products via their computers, smartphones, and tables from anywhere in the country.

Mr. Chung attributed Kenya’s growing popularity of e-commerce shopping experience to increased use of mobile-based and online-based payment platforms.
